What constitutes a heatwave in the UK? ›

Heatwave threshold definition

A UK heatwave is met when a location records a period of at least three consecu- tive days with maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding a heatwave tempera- ture threshold. The threshold varies by UK county in the range 25–28°C and is shown in Figure 1.

In the Northeast United States, a heat wave is typically defined as three consecutive days where the temperature reaches or exceeds 90°F (32.2 °C). However, this temperature is often combined with humidity levels to determine the heat index threshold.

Firstly, the warmer weather is being linked to a jet stream which has brought largely unsettled weather conditions to the UK in recent weeks. The Met Office said in its weather report that the jet stream was continuing to shift north from Spain, allowing high pressure to build across the UK.

2022 was also the UK's warmest year on record, with the average annual temperature rising above 10 degrees Celsius for the first time.

Our studies on young healthy men and women show that this upper environmental limit is even lower than the theorized 35 C. It's more like a wet-bulb temperature of 31 C (88 F). That would equal 31 C at 100% humidity or 38 C (100 F) at 60% humidity.

The hottest temperature ever recorded on Earth was 134 degrees in July 1913 at Furnace Creek, said Randy Ceverny of the World Meteorological Organization, the body recognized as keeper of world records. Temperatures at or above 130 degrees have only been recorded on Earth a handful of times, mostly in Death Valley.

Even at this level of exposure, heatwaves are the deadliest of all climate risks. By 2050 around 970 cities will be at least this hot, with much higher exposure in Asia, Africa and North America (see Figure 1). Average high temperatures of 35°C (95°F) will mean that heatwaves will become far more intense.

The Met Office is rated as the strongest of the main digital weather forecast providers in terms of consumer perceptions of accuracy, with a Consumer Accuracy Index of 76.4 for first and second providers, compared to an average of 74.8 for the other digital brands surveyed.

The average temperature over the last decade in the UK has been 0.8°C warmer than the 1961-1990 average. All of the UK's 10 warmest years on record have occurred since 2002. In July 2022, UK temperatures exceeded 40°C for the first time on record.

Projections show that the climate emergency could have considerable impacts in England. The current annual temperature is roughly 8.8 degrees Celsius, but by 2050 temperatures could rise to between 9.1 degrees Celsius and 11.7 degrees Celsius. The probability of heatwaves could also increase five-fold.

If efforts to tackle global heating don't improve, parts of the UK could theoretically average 40C in July 2050, as shown in the Met Office image. But then there will also be individual weather events like today, where heatwaves could reach 45C, or closer to 50C, in 2050.

Remember that when you see a weather forecast on TV, in a newspaper or on the radio, that anything from 20 degrees upwards is going to be warm, above 25 degrees is hot, above 30 degrees is very hot.

Humidity is one reason, explained the Met Office. The UK has a higher level of humidity than the European continent and “it is harder for the human body to keep cool as your sweat doesn't evaporate as quickly.”

The fourth and final warning level means a heatwave has continued for so long at such high temperatures that its effects “extend outside the health and social care system”. The Met Office warns that death and illness may occur among the fit and healthy at this stage, as well as in high-risk groups.

There's no guidance for a maximum temperature limit. Employers must stick to health and safety at work law, including: keeping the temperature at a comfortable level. providing clean and fresh air.
